- How does SDN benefit and fit into optical networks
A truly international speaker line up with operator case study presentations from countries including Australia, China, Colombia, France, Japan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, Taiwan addressed a packed conference room comprising 37+ different service provider companies.
The presentations and highly interactive discussions started with Andrew Schmitt from Infonetics discussing the once in a decade transition to coherent transmission and case studies were delivered by Verizon outlining their 100G metro networks strategy, by CERNET discussing their 100G WDM network ready for deployment with a 10 year lifecycle and not using OTN and supporting aggregated IP traffic.
Next up was PTCL investigating the challenges and opportunities of 100G and higher speeds and how the cloud and data centres fit in. Xtera shared with the audience their take on 100G for terrestrial backbone and backhaul networks across Asia and the following operator discussion highlighted the cost of 100G was a delaying factor in many operators across Asia directly deploying 100G from 10G.
Alcatel-Lucent looked ahead and spoke about the need for long-term investment and innovation in silicon and software to stay ahead of the bandwidth curve. Chunghwa Telecom conveyed their thoughts on migrating backhaul from leased-line to Ethernet/IP for high speed mobile data.
Nucleus Connect announced that 10GPON will reach reliable and economical level for field deployment in 2-3years time. There were interesting discussions as to why Fibrecomm & Telstra chose 40G rather than going straight to 100G and MTN Nigeria shared their migration from legacy to 40G OTN.
NTT demonstrated converged packet optical transport network APS linear protection in MPLS-TP is proven and indispensable, Orange discussed transparent optical from end-to-end and Tellabs sharing deployment of pure SDN solution.
A packed 2 days with lots of audience participation, sharing of solutions and networking giving all attendees food for thought and new ideas to take back to their "day jobs".

“It was very nice. The choice of speakers and arrangement was wonderful. Also the networking was good for me as I was able to learn what other operators are doing in their markets.”UI, MTN Nigeria
“I was impressed with the number and different service provider companies from across the APAC region and as an operator it was useful to share and hear experiences from operators on 40G, 100G and OTN plans”AN, PTCL
“It’s my pleasure to speak at the WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking APAC. It was a very successful event indeed, congratulations!”SL, Nucleus Connect
